International Conference on Discrete Mathematics - 2008

being jointly organized by Academy of Discrete Mathematics and Applications (ADMA), Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre for Intensification of Interaction on Interdisciplinary Discrete Mathematical Sciences (SRC III DMS) and University of Mysore.

Places of Tourist Interest in and around Mysore

Maharaja's Main Palace: Once the residence of the Wodeyars who ruled Mysore, the palace is one of the largest of its kind in India. Weekly illumination on all Sundays and on Government Holidays from 19.00 Hours to 20.00 Hours. Palace can be visited from 10.30 Hours till 17.30 Hours with entry fees.
Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery: Housed in Jaganmohan Palace close to the City Bus Station, the gallery has exquisite collection of paintings and art works. Visiting Hours: 10.30 Hours to 17.30 Hours with entry fee.
St. Philomena Church: One of the largest churches in South India.
Mysore Zoo: A sprawling zoo and one of the oldest in India containing a variety of animals from within the country and abroad. Entry by fee.
Chamundi Hill: A hillock 13 kms, from the City Bus Station. Has a temple and a statue of demon Mahishasura. Frequent buses ply from the City Bus Station to the hillock.
Brindavan Gardens: About 15 kms from the City Bus Station. This is a must for tourists. Built below the Krishnarajasagar Dam across River Kaveri which supplies potable water to Mysore. Brindavan Gardens with its beautifulgarden and a musical fountain is transformed into virtual dreamland during the night with splendid illumination. Is connected to the City by buses and taxis/ cabs.
Silk weaving Factory: Mysore is famous for its silks and this factory is at about a distance of 5 kms. from the City Bus Station. It has a show room which is open during week days from 10.30 Hours till 17.30 Hours and sells silk sarees at Government rates.
Kaveri Emporium: This is situated on the Sayyaji Rao Road, one of the two arterial roads of the city, close to the Bus Station. This is a Government owned shop where Handicrafts and Sandalwood items are sold. A must for window shoppers.
Srirangapatna: A small town, 15 kms. from Mysore by road/ rail. It was capital of Tippu Sultan' kingdom. A popular place of pilgrimage for Hindus is the Sriranganathaswamy temple. Island town with the river Kaveri encircling the town. Other places of interests are Water Gate, where Tipu was killed, Tippu's Summer Palace, etc. Well connected to Mysore by road/ rail.
Ranganathittu: A bird sanctuary 18 kms. from Mysore and 4 kms from Srirangapatna. A must for bird watchers to have closer look at water birds.
Melkote: About 50 kms. from Mysore. This is also a pilgrimage place for Hindus, especially the Vaishnavas as the great exponent of Vishishtadvaitha Ramanuja lived here. Famous for its temple and rocky terrain. Can travel by taxis/ cabs from Mysore.
Somanathapura: 35 kms. from Mysore. This village is famous for its temples representing the Hoysala architecture. Taxis/ Cabs available from Mysore to visit the village.
Talakadu: Situated 45 kms. from Mysore on the banks of the River Kaveri, this place has five temples, some of which are partly covered under sand dunes.
Shimsha: 80 kms. from Mysore, the river Kaveri plunges 91 meters into a gorge and presents a spectacular sight. A picnic spot.
Kaveri Fishing Camp: 90 kms. from Mysore, off the village of Bhimeshwari on the banks of Kaveri, this is a perfect place for fishing enthusiasts.
Belur and Halebeedu: Located about 157 kms. from Mysore, these two places are famous for Hoysala architecture. The sculptures here are world famous for their craftsmanship. Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) has daily trips to these places from Mysore.
Shravanabelagola: 99 kms. from Mysore. This Jain pilgrimage center has a monolith statue of Lord Bahubali, which is 56 feet high, said to be the world tallest monolith. Connected by bus from Mysore.

Shopping in Mysore:

Mysore is famous for its hand-woven silk garments and sarees. The quality of silk is good and the prices, competitive. Other good buys include handicrafts in rosewood, sandalwood, stone, brass, lacquer-ware, wooden toys, coffee, incense sticks and carpets.
