GROUP DISCUSSION ON PERFECT GRAPHS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS
November 15-24, 2007
being jointly organized by Academy of Discrete Mathematics and Applications (ADMA), Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre for Intensification of Interaction on Interdisciplinary Discrete Mathematical Sciences (SRC III DMS) and is sponsored by the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.
Venue: Regional Institute of Education (NCERT), Mysore - 570 006
Perfect Graphs and their Applications:
A graph is perfect if for each of its induced subgraph H, the chromatic number of H is equal to the maximum number of mutually adjacent vertices in it. The perfect graphs were discovered by CLAUDE BERGE during the early 1960's. The importance of perfect graphs is both theoretical (because of their bearing on coloring problems, independence number, etc.) and practical (because of their applications to perfect channels in Communication Theory [Shannon, 1956], problems in Operations Research, optimizing municipal services, etc.). The Strong Perfect Graph Conjecture (SGPC, 1961) due to Berge played vital role in popularization of Perfect Graphs. The conjecture which was eluding solution for more than four decades, has been proved by Chudnovasky et al. in May 2002. However, there is still a large area for research in perfect graphs. For example, some of the interesting classes of perfect graphs like strongly and co-strongly perfect graphs are not completely characterized even today. There is an urgent need to consolidate India's achievements in this important frontline area of research in Combinatorial Mathematics, and take them to further heights through intensive interaction.
About 25-30 outstation participants will be selected on All-India basis. The selection will be based on the nature of work already done in the field of Graph Theory and Combinatorics as well as the deep interest shown by the participants to interact with the experts in the field.
The idea of Group Discussion is to generate frontline research problems and identify active researchers who have a research agenda before them. They will be encouraged to take up 3-4 years research projects with support from the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.
